UPCYCLING
What is upcycling?
Upcycling means reusing (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. It is a way of processing an item to something new yet old. In terms of clothing, it is taking something that doesn't fit or is stained/torn and create a wearable product from it.
What is reworking?
When a garment is reworked the main construction of the item usually stays the same. You can take an old or barely worn sweater and add something to it. One can cut it and put an elastic drawstring in the hem to give it a twist. It is almost like changing the design to make it more personal or interesting. This means that instead of throwing items away they are turned into something desirable and useful.
What is repurposing?
Repurposing means taking an item and giving it a new or different purpose. In fashion it is a technique to turn any kind of fabric (e.g. table clothes, blanket covers, curtains, tents, etc.) into a fresh wearable garment. UTI EXI repurposed a shower curtain into a pant (see here).
